In this afterschool session, teachers explore how children can learn about a variety of economic concepts using picture books, “New Shoes” by Susan Lynn Meyer and “Those Shoes” by Maribeth Boelts. These two books introduce readers to the economic concept of decision-making, producers and consumers, entrepreneurism, needs and wants. Teachers tour New-York Historical Society’s Walk This Way exhibit, which draws connections to the story of how producers and consumers of shoes have contributed to trends in America’s economic history.

In this full day session, teachers explore how elementary students can learn about the concept of freedom through the president’s call for human rights and symbol of hope for our nation. Teachers tour New-York Historical Society’s Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedom’s exhibit, which is encompasses numerous examples of paintings, historical documents, interactive digital displays of Rockwell’s depictions of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms.
