Expired History Talks! with Michael Adas and Joseph Gilch

Join us for a special History Talks! with Toynbee Prize winning Global Historian, Michael Adas and emerging historian Joseph Glich as they discuss his research on the Vietnam War.  Learn about the war in a groundbreaking fashion that shifts scale and discusses multiple perspectives in order to contextualize the experience of one American soldier, Jimmy Gilch. Adas and Gilch’s book Everyman in Vietnam explores the nature and enduring significance of the Vietnam conflict based on an exceptional collection of letters written by an American soldier during his tour of duty.

Participants will receive a primary source set curated by the Social Studies Department and the National Archives that can be paired with content from Adas and Gilch’s presentation.  In addition, all attendees will receive a copy of Everyman in Vietnam: A Soldier’s Journey into the Quagmire.

Michael Adas is a professor of history emeritus from Rutgers University. His other books include Machines as the Measure of Men and Dominance by Design.  He is also the co-author of the popular AP textbook, World Civilizations the Global Experience. Currently, he is working on two projects,  A Grave Dug in Flanders: World War I and the Crisis of the European World Order for the Cambridge University Press; and The Soldiers’ Lament: Misbegotten Wars and the Decline of Great Powers.  Joseph Gilch is a student in Rutgers University’s Comparative and Global History program and is a first year teacher.
